Inner contentment reflects in your outward appearance. Sounds logical, but pretty abstract. “Once I turned 50, I started to really feel comfortable in my own skin and doubting myself less“, says Model Aiden, who sums up his personal journey in the video below.
Nowadays, people are increasingly aiming to find personal fulfilment. Me time and mindfulness are on trend. Being at peace with yourself makes it easier to feel balanced and at ease. Some people seek this inner peace on yoga retreats or through meditation. Both are great ways to consciously reflect on life. If that sounds too fanciful, here are six practical ways to achieve inner balance:

Find a look that feels right, inside and out
Contentment means looking in the mirror and liking what you see. You don't feel comfortable in a super stylish new outfit? Toss it! Clothes are supposed to make you feel good – and the same goes for your hair. Only wear styles that you like, regardless of what's in fashion or what other people think would suit you. You will radiate confidence if you like your look!
Find a workout you love
... and exercise regularly. Working out makes you feel better instantly, with long term benefits. It also helps you settle into your own body and become more aware of your physicality. There's no point in forcing yourself to do exercise you don't enjoy, so find the workout that's right for you. Couch potatoes are more easily motivated by workouts that don't feel like hard work –like bouldering, barre cardio or trampoline jumping.
„Make yourself a priority once in a while. It’s not selfish. It’s necessary!“
Karen A. Baquiran
Having a bad hair day? Feel like your waistband is a bit too tight? Ordering takeaway yet again? Don't be so hard on yourself. You don't always have to look perfect and it's perfectly fine to indulge once in a while. Practice self care with feel good foods that make you happy and healthy, like dark chocolate, bananas and nuts.
Date night with yourself
Buzzword: Me Time. Surrounding yourself with loved ones and people whose company you enjoy is great, but it's equally important to spend time by yourself. It allows you time to do what you really want to and catch up on things that don't usually fit into your busy schedule. Tip: Don't make great plans, but do what you feel like spontaneously and intuitively. Wander through the city, settle down in a café with a good book, listen to an audio book, learn a new language or pamper yourself with a home spa session, complete with facial and hair mask. Or really indulge with a scalp massage at a salon. Find a Schwarzkopf Professional Stylist near you with our Salon Finder.
Surround yourself with positive things
...and let everything else go. That means anything that isn't good for you or that you don't need. Decluttering will make you more content and you'll feel free and focused. There are many areas of your life you can declutter: Facebook friends, phone contacts, wardrobe or bathroom cabinet. Check the expiry date on cosmetics and replace only what you really need. Mascara usually keeps for six months, moisturisers one year, lipstick and gloss three years; shampoo and conditioner practically keep forever.
Creativity helps you relax and encourages your mind to wander. Rearrange your furniture or create a statement wall in your home. Step up your styling by stencilling a cool statement t-shirt or making DIY runway-inspired accessories here. Trendy hair accessories can help upgrade any hairstyle. Tip: Geometrically shaped hair clips are on trend right now.
Anyone can be creative, whether you think you have a talent for it or not.
