More and more people are choosing to live an increasingly sustainable lifestyle and acknowledging that their actions have an impact on the environment. This way of living involves meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. At Schwarzkopf, we take our responsibility seriously and have therefore undertaken many measures to ensure our hair coloration products and processes are as sustainable as possible. Only then can we make the world a better place. We want to share our plans and achievements with you.
Schwarzkopf’s Journey to Better Sustainability
At Schwarzkopf, we are working towards transforming our coloration portfolio, for example, by using more recycled material and therefore promoting a circular economy. We work relentlessly to come up with new ideas to become more eco-friendly every day.
When you next pick up a box of Schwarzkopf hair color, rest assured that you’re doing your part to help support sustainability because we’re well on our way to ensuring almost everything contained inside the box (including the box itself!) is made from completely recycled or recyclable material. The box is composed of 100% recyclable paper, the leaflet of 100% recycled paper, and the developer bottle and gloves of 100% recyclable plastic. Not forgetting the color cream tube consisting of 100% recycled aluminum, which we’ll delve into later. Here are just a few examples of the Schwarzkopf brands where we’ve gone further on our quest for sustainability:
- Brillance coloration formula is free from animal-derived ingredients, and we’ve even reduced the amount of plastic used to manufacture the developer bottle. Read more about Brillance and sustainability.
- Natural & Easy’s formula comprises up to 93% naturally derived ingredients (including water), and the developer bottle is now made with less plastic than it was in 2020. Read more about Natural & Easy and sustainability.
- Perfect Mousse, as well as reducing the amount of plastic in the developer bottle, we’ve achieved a 99% recycled plastic rate in the foam pump top. The conditioner now contains 98% ingredients of natural origin (80% being water). Read more about Perfect Mousse and sustainability.
In August 2020, we switched over to using 100% recycled aluminum for our color cream tubes in our popular coloration brand, Diadem. We then decided to expand our commitment to switching to other Schwarzkopf color products. This change will affect up to 20 million coloration tubes a year – 126 tons of aluminum. The outcome will be a reduction in our CO² footprint due to the fact that recycled aluminum requires up to 95% less energy compared to primary aluminum. Another advantage is that aluminum tubes are completely recyclable and can be recovered through existing waste management systems.
We are more than sure that other companies in the beauty and haircare industry will follow our lead when they realize the advantages of swapping to recycled aluminum and therefore contributing towards a circular economy.
Do Good, Feel Great, and Look Your Best
At Schwarzkopf, we have the responsibility as a global brand to pave the way when it comes to social and environmental responsibility. One of the main benefits of sustainable products is that they are less harmful to the environment. By changing our packaging to more environmentally friendly material as well as ensuring our formulas are made up of as many naturally derived ingredients as possible, we’re doing our part to become a more sustainable company as well as keeping our promise of making you look and feel great at the same time.
So, every time you color your locks with one of our stunning coloration kits, you’re not just making your hair more beautiful, but you’re also contributing to a more beautiful, sustainable world.
