The sun is just about to drive out Old Man Winter with inclement weather, which kept us indoors or wrapped up in layers of clothing. It is time for open shoes and skimpy summer dresses. But stop! We haven’t considered the proper summer hairstyles yet. Models on the catwalks of fashion metropolis show beautiful hairstyles made easy. We like to help you out with a few tips on getting your hair ready for summer

  • Now is the time to practice styling unique but simple summer hairstyles to look good wherever you spend your summer. Whether you embark on the summer vacation of your life on exotic shores, get ready for a party in your backyard or discover the beauty of forests, rivers, and lakes nearby, the hairstyle must be simple and under no circumstances should it keep you from having fun in the sun. Besides, spending a lot of the gorgeous summer time on hairstyling is a waste of time. The heat, humidity, and possibly the wind will make short shrift of elaborately styled hairdos anyway.  Don’t fret if your styling does not exactly look as planned! Simply call it your undone summer hairstyle. Summer hairstyles don’t have to be accurate or styled until the hair is absolutely straight or every curl is properly defined. Allow a few strands to go wherever they may. Undone hairstyles are in vogue. However, undone is not synonymous with raggle-taggle. Untended hair is not cool at all.

We hope our tips and inspiration will help you find your easy breezy hairstyles for your favourite summer activities.

  • How to Keep Your Hair Fit Throughout the Summer Season

Your hair may survive a day in the sun without signs of damage. Over time however, combinations of sun, wind, salt water, and chlorinated water will take their toll, leaving hair brittle and dull.

It does not matter whether your hair is beach blonde or sunset brunette. In the summer months, hair needs extra care to stay vibrant and shiny.

  • Hair care with UV protectant: UVA and UVB filters protect the hair as well as the sensitive scalp. Today, many styling products contain these protective ingredients.

Under cover: Wear a hat if you want to spend time in the sun. Hats not only protect hair and scalp, they also guard against heat strokes. Wearing a hat also gives you a unique style.

Brush the fringes aside: In the summer months, fringes can be bothersome. Underneath the hair, heat and sebum may accumulate and cause blemishes on the forehead. Simply allow the fringes to grow and pin them back.

Give the blow-dryer a rest: Use your blow-dryer as little as possible. After drying in the gentle warm summer breeze, hair looks healthy and naturally beautiful.

  • Casual beach waves are the ideal starting point for summer hairstyles. In his step-by-step video tutorial, top hair stylist Armin Morbach shows how to create beach waves.

Noble Summer Hairstyle: The Looped Ponytail

Models for Naeem Khan Fashions showcased sleek hair with looped ponytail.

Create a low ponytail and tuck it under to create a loop. Wrap the ponytail end around the base of the ponytail and secure it with bobby pins.

Add a personal touch by wrapping the ponytail base not with the end of the ponytail but with a knotted leather band in hippie style, a gold clasp as seen in the Dries van Noten fashion show, or adorn the ponytail base with feathers like the models for Gucci.

This looped ponytail looks perfect in combination with straight shiny hair and middle parting. Blazers in sorbet colours (pink, orange, and red hues) look ideal with this hairstyle

Edgy Summer Hairstyle: Wet Hair Accents

Rag & Bone redefines the wet look with his new hairstyles. Only part of the hair near the roots rather than the entire hair is styled in the wet look. The long ends of the hair are kept in a natural style. We also saw this style in fashion shows presented by Chanel and Alexander McQueen.

While the hair is meant to shine, it should not appear oily. It is therefore wise to take it easy on the gel. Eugene Souleiman (hair stylist for Stella McCartney and other designers) applies the gel using a hair brush rather than his fingers. This spreads the gel more evenly. You may like to give this nifty trick a try.

    Creative Summer Hairstyle: Braids

We saw this hairstyle in the Emerson fashion show. Several braids artfully cross the head to be combined to a knot in the lower neck. This hairstyle keeps the hair away from the forehead and out of the face. It may even survive a dive into the swimming pool.

To create this hairstyle, French braid your hair so that several braids cross your head. In the lower neck, the braids are twisted into a chignon. This hairstyle is also suitable for short hair.

The braids can be easily styled if your hair is thick and manageable. The hairdo looks perfect in combination with a leather jacket over an airy summer dress

Nonchalant Summer Hairstyle: Long Open Hair with Twirled Front Hair

This hairstyle is both beautiful and practical. Models for the fashion houses Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Luca Luca secure the sideways twirled front hair with hair slides or eye-catching hair jewellery. The soft waves give the style a nonchalant flair.

It does not get simpler than this! Separate a strand of hair on both sides of your forehead and twirl it around toward the back. Combine the twirled strands in the back and secure them with the hair accessory of your choice.

The Devil-May-Care Summer Hairstyle: Beach Waves

Victoria’s Secret’s angel Candice Swanepoel wears our favourite summer look, beach waves and vibrant smiles. Miranda Kerr proves how beautiful brown beach waves look.

The waves in the long ends of the hair are created with the help of a curling iron. Hold the curling iron vertically while wrapping individual strands of hair around it. The hair is randomly wrapped around the rod of the curling iron either toward or away from the face. Hold the end of each hair strand with your fingers while it is wrapped around the curling iron rod rather than securing the end with the clamp of your curling iron. This is crucial for creating the characteristic look of undone beach waves.

The perfect outfit for the beach wave look is of course a bikini with semi-transparent top

Glamorous Summer Hairstyle: Long Side-Swept Hair

Maika Monroe shows the classy nature of long side-swept hair. On hot summer days, it also keeps the neck cool by keeping it free of hair.

For this summer hairstyle, the hair is tautly combed back on one side and loosely swept over the shoulder on the opposite side. You may like to secure the hair crossing the lower neck with bobby pins.

Glamour waves complete this summer hairstyle, which looks perfect in combination with cut-out tops or dresses
