Braids are sure to be romantic. Artistically intertwined and pinned up for good measure, as seen here with actress Emma Miller, they are transformed into the epitome of elegance and sophistication. A ladylike hairstyle worthy of Valentine’s Day, harmonising with dramatic eye makeup, sparkling earrings and a lace dress à la Emma Miller. Dinner for two or a visit to the opera: This updo is perfect for such occasions

    How the Gretel Updo Works:

Divide the hair into four to six sections of different sizes, one of them especially wide on one side in the area of the temple. Make this into a simple, loose braid along the forehead to the opposite side and secure it with hair clips. With the remaining sections, make braids of different sizes towards the rear centre of the head. For the popular undone look: hold on to one of the strands after braiding and push the other two with your fingers away from the end towards the base of the braid (except for the Gretel braid at the front). Interesting, irregular formations are the result. Fix the braids to your head with hair clips any way you fancy and twist the loose ends into a small chignon

A few loose strands frame the face in front, while a simple braided detail (click again to view) ingeniously catches the eye at the back of the head. This charming hairstyle is really easy to conjure up with a lob or longer hair. US actress and singer Stefanie Scott refines her updo with classic, feminine makeup: a black eyelid line and kissable red lips. This fabulous dinner style is perfect for romantic moments

How to style the romantic chignon:

Straighten the hair if necessary and form a centre parting. Then brush it back and tie it with an inconspicuous hair elastic at the back of the neck. To keep the updo from looking too severe, pluck out a few strands at the hairline and let them fall over the forehead. Braid the hair at the back of the neck and then twist it around itself one or more times – depending on the hair length – forming an oblong chignon that is secured with bobby pins

Hairdos for Valentine’s Day: Half-up with a Twist

You prefer to let your hair down? If so, give it a simple yet effective twist for the day of love by loosely styling the top hair towards the back like series star Beth Behrs. Her long bob falls in soft waves, partly pinned back for a slightly retro look and added volume. All-round talent: This smart yet easygoing hairdo is great for a variety of Valentine’s Day happenings and goes well with both casual and cocktail outfits

How to Style the Half-up With a Twist:

Fine, shoulder length hair like Beth Behrs or a great big mane? This style is well suited for any hair type. With a finer texture however, it works better if the hair is not freshly washed. This gives it more grip (a similar effect can be achieved with hair powder). If the hair is naturally straight, use a straightening or curling iron for added movement. Try to work strands that are as wide as possible and comb out the curls into soft waves with a coarse comb afterwards. The separate the top hair, pull it back, twist it up at the back of the head and secure it with two or three bobby pins

Pinned up hairdos that sit a bit lower at the back of the neck like a small work of art create a spectacular and highly elegant appearance. A voluminous chignon for instance, with a variety of braided patterns as seen on model Kathryn Boyd. Just like the hair, her dress also plays with asymmetry and sophisticated details such as pleats and gathers

How to style the messy chignon mix:

Form a side parting, pull out two strands on the left and right of the forehead and briefly twist each of them around a curling iron. Pull back the rest of the hair and divide it into two sections, one extra wide and the other much narrower. Starting around ear height, make a thick, voluminous braid and a smaller one. Then lay the two braids one over the other so that the narrower rests on the wider one and loosely pin the two together with hair clips. Loosen up the resulting arrangement with your fingers or the handle of a comb and pluck out individual strands for the messy look. If your hair is fine, work in strands of synthetic hair to give the chignon the necessary volume

Hairdos for Valentine’s Day: Braided Crown with Waves

For the festival of love, would you like to be put on a pedestal? If so, this modern princess style for short or long hair could be for you: Undone waves crowned by a half-up with a French braid. British actress Imogen Poots combines this enchanting hairdo with discreet makeup: the eyes and brows are brought out by soft brown nuances while the lips are rosé. Sure to be irresistible! And since the flowing mane is reminiscent of the hippie style, dresses and blouses in the boho look are perfect fashion companions

How to Style the Braided Crown with Waves:

First use a straightening iron to style the hair into even curls, then let it cool and comb it out with a coarse comb. Form a centre parting and separate a strand respectively on the left and right. Divide each strand into three and braid it back in the French style. Only with the strand that is on the bottom, pick up a new strand from the loose hair each time. At the back of the head, simply gather the two braids with a hair elastic or secure them with bobby pins (more elegant and less conspicuous)
