Kick up your styling by a notch or two and create one of today’s casual updos. On a hot summer day, updos have the extra advantage of keeping the hair out of the neck. Casual updos are ideal for summer outings, a day on the beach or for lazy summer afternoons in the shade

  • Summer is here with new fashions and new updos. This year’s summer hairstyles are casual, romantic, playful, and cool.

  • Summertime Updos: The Ever-Popular Chignon

There are plenty of reasons why women love to wear chignons and why chignons have such staying power among stylish women, dancers, stars, and models. They are versatile enough to express individual styles, and they are as practical as they are beautiful on hot summer days. Wear your chignon version in the great outdoors, on the back porch or wherever you like to spend your summer. Chignons are unbeatable as stylish and practical summer hairstyle!

Actress January Jones (see the photo above) wears her chignon high on the crown of her head. The ends of her gathered hair are not tucked under the chignon and a few strands of hair are allowed to hang free for a delightfully sassy appearance. The bright lipstick and colourful accessories complete the spirited summer style.

  • Step by step styling instructions for January Jones’ summertime chignon:

    1. Apply a small amount of volumising powder to your hair to make it more manageable and to give the chignon more hold.

    2. Hang your head upside down and use a scrunchy to gather a ponytail high on the crown of your head.

    3. Twist the ponytail until it turns back on itself into a chignon. Secure the chignon using bobby pins or a second scrunchy. Allow some hair ends to peak out from underneath the chignon.

    4. Allow a few strands of hair to escape from the updo for an undone hairstyle. You may want to brush a few loose strands of side hair behind your ears.

    5. Apply hairspray for secure hold.

Updos for Summer Fun: The Undone Ponytail

The much loved ponytail is here to stay. Hardly any other hairstyle can compete with it on the popularity scale. Yet, with all their merits even ponytails can use a makeover every once in a while. Astrid Bergès-Frisbey wears a messy ponytail version. This is the ideal ponytail for women who do not want to miss a minute of summertime fun.

Styling: Create the now popular beach waves by applying some salt spray to your towel-dry hair and blow-drying it. Do not use a brush while you blow-dry your hair. Instead, simply run your fingers through it. If your hair is naturally straight you have several options to create soft beach waves. First turn a strand of hair around its axis and then wind this strand around the small-diameter rod of a blow-dryer. Hold the blow-dryer rod in vertical direction away from your scalp. Do not curl the hair ends but rather hold them while allowing the warmth of the blow-dryer to create the waves. Hold the blow-dryer for a short while. In this way, create beach waves in your entire hair before you gather it into a high ponytail, which should be positioned just a tad off-centre. A few strands of stray hair complete the undone hairstyle

Updos for Summer Fun: Crown Braids

Playful braids delight the heart of every woman and may even bring out the artist in you. Obviously, playfulness and summer are natural companions. So naturally, Anna Sophia Robb shows off her braids while also wearing her most infectious smile. She might be looking forward to a garden party.

Styling: Start by creating a short side parting. Then partition your hair into a right and left portion. Start French-braiding your hair across the forehead starting at the parting. Continue French-braiding your side hair and secure the side braid using hidden bobby pins. Now start French-braiding your hair on the opposite side of your head (the side with the parting) starting at ear level. Braid toward the neck. Secure this braid with bobby pins as well. Braid the hair ends. Finally, apply hairspray to keep the braids in place

Updos for Summer Fun: The Chignon

Chignons are ideally suited for hot days because they practical, keep the hair out of face and neck and look pretty. Styling chignons is very easy. Jessica Hart likes to push her sun glasses up on top of her head. The chignon towers right over her stylish glasses for a unique look.

Styling: Apply styling mousse to your hair to make it more manageable. Hang your head upside down and gather your hair into a high ponytail. With your head up again, twirl the ponytail until it curls into a chignon around the ponytail scrunchy. Secure the chignon with bobby pins and apply some hairspray

Updos for Summer Fun: The Crown Braid

Here, the traditional crown braid shows its whimsical and even a little impish sides. Sophie Kennedy Clark with her traditional crown braid seems to have mischief in mind. The middle parting and loose braiding add a casual note to this hairstyle.

Styling: Apply styling mousse to your hair and comb it straight. Create a middle parting and partition the hair in the back of your head along the midline as well. Braid the hair on one side of your head and secure the end of the braid with a thin scrunchy; then braid the hair on the other side in the same way. Now arrange both braids upward along the side of your head. Secure both braids on top of your head using hidden bobby pins. Apply hairspray for extended hold

Summertime Updos: Ponytail with a Twist

Ponytails have long outgrown their image as merely practical hairstyle solution. Amanda Seyfried gave her ponytail a new image by twisting it between the ponytail ends and the scrunchy. This gives her ponytail extra interest. Ponytails fit in everywhere at any time including picnics in the park, summer fairs and fancy beach parties.

Styling: Apply volumising powder to your hair to make it more manageable. After gathering your hair into a high ponytail, separate the ponytail into two equally thick strands and start twisting each strand around. Now wrap one strand around the other and secure the end using a scrunchy. Use plenty of hairspray to keep the twist from relaxing
