Crucial question: Does the popular braiding trend only work in long hair? We say no – putting an end to the long hair myth. Our top five prove how great braided styles can look in short cuts from the pixie to the bob. Have you caught the braiding fever? Then go for it!

  • The trendy classic: Romantic, casual or super edgy – braided hairdos are very popular right now. Celebrities, star bloggers and beauties all over the place are appearing with this look (even on the red carpet), braiding for all their hair is worth. Beautiful braiding adds that something extra in next to no time. Accurate and perfect styling is by no means necessary. This is exactly what drives the current hair hype: The new generation of braids skilfully turns heads with loose combinations, stray strands and messy styling!

But you need long hair for that, right? Not necessarily: The braiding trend can be realised beautifully in short cuts as well – as an eye-catching little detail or a sophisticated full-blown hairdo. You will marvel how much you can get out of the pixie, bob and other short cuts! Our gallery presents five braiding ideas for short hair you can easily style yourself.

    Braided Style with Undercut

Kelly Osbourne knows how to style short hair. She combines no less than three hairdo trends: Lilac nuances, shaved sides (= cool undercut) and the braided effect! The rock singer has made the longer section at the back of the head into a French braid from the bottom to the top. The remaining hair at the crown is twisted into a quiff and secured with a glittering hair brooch (on the left in this photo) – which is actually hairdo trend number four...

    Braided Centre Parting

Do you wear a pixie? Then braid it straight down the middle: The longer hair on the crown is easy to style into an eye-catching braided parting. In order to do so, work some hair wax into the ends for extra hold and part off two strands at the hairline over the forehead. Cross them over each other and secure the joined ends with a hair pin of a suitable colour. Now take the next two strands and repeat this process until you get to the back of the head. This creates the fake braid. Finally, secure the whole thing with hair spray

    Pixie with Triumvirate

Your hair is consistently short? If so, you can braid three smaller sections in the fake look instead of a single wide one. Or try the twirling trick and simply twist up the strands. This is just as popular as the braided version but works a lot better in very short hair. Styling paste keeps the strands and ends in place so the hairdo does not fall apart. The sides remain unbraided and entirely natural or are strictly styled to the back with some hair gel

    Cornrows in Baby Bob

Arrange your bob in a new 'rasta' for a change – with braids formed close to the head known as cornrows. These braids reminiscent of rows of corn celebrate their comeback in our hair with the current nineties revival. Today the look is also known as boxer braids. For this style, all of the hair is tightly braided from the hairline to the ends. You can however choose the softer version as well and only tie one or two strands on one side – which also creates the popular sidecut effect!

Short Gel Style with Braided Element

Gone askew? No, diagonally braided – that’s how you turn heads! Actress, DJ and model Ruby Rose shows us how it’s done, presenting a short cut with added chic: She parts her short hair on the side and braids the somewhat longer section on the crown diagonally to the back. A sophisticated, romantic detail in the otherwise clean gel style – by the way, the gel also keeps the braid neat and tidy. Braided style verdict: A great contrast with a cool cut!
