Keeping the ball low? Not their thing: as top athletes, superstars and styling pros, footballers are increasingly setting new standards. Their hairdos in particular make the players popular role models beyond the standings. In our hairstyle line-up, we present the looks that will take the 2016 European Championship by storm

  • Europe has football fever: In June the best team on the continent from one of 24 nations will be crowned at the European Championship. Everybody wants to be there – in the stadium or at the public viewing. Which teams will make it to the finals, who will capture the coveted European Champion title? There is a lot at stake here. No wonder the players are the focus of attention. Naturally the footballer's athletic abilities are what counts the most. But in the meantime, the pros have also become popular with their fans thanks to other qualities. Such as their look. Hair plays an important role here. The hairdos of the football idols are being copied and styled by numerous fans. The World Champions from Germany, title holders from Spain, players from Italy, England, Belgium, Austria, Poland or Northern Ireland... no matter from what country or league. We took a closer look at the kickers and ball artists of the 2016 European Championship to celebrate the coolest hairdos among the champions. These glorious seven made it from the preliminary round to the finals – here are our favourites for the hairstyle title:

    Footballer Hairdo: Sergio Ramos

At the last European Championship in Poland and the Ukraine, Spain walked off the field victorious as European Champions. Part of the team: Sergio Ramos. As the captain of Real Madrid, he will also be in France for the 2016 contest – this time to defend the title. The Spaniard appears self-confident, in part thanks to his style. He wears an undercut, buzzed short on the sides and at the back of the head. Sergio Ramos styles the longer top hair with a low side parting (also called a comb-over), scoring points with the trendy hairdo even off the field. A full beard adds an extra kick to the star footballer's look

    Footballer Hairdo: Paul Pogba

The 2016 European Championship is a home game for Paul Pogba from France. A fact he highlights with his head: The midfielder has shaved his hair short – especially on the sides, where the football talent keeps presenting creative new motifs. Currently spectators get to see 'PogBoom' on the left side, a term that designates the professional player's explosive long-range shots. A popular hashtag of Paul Pogba fans on social networks by the way. On the other side the Juve star wears the Gallic Rooster (the symbol of his national team) in his hair with patriotism suited to the European Championship

    Footballer Hairdo: Mario Gomez

After Mario Gomez was unable to fly to Brazil for the World Championship in 2014 because of an injury, the German national team striker should be all the more hungry to score goals at the European Championship in France. His hairdo: casual and flexible. The longer hair on the crown is simply kneaded into shape with some styling wax. Sounds like a good tactic: after scoring a goal with a header and the subsequent jubilation, the original style can be restored with one cool hand movement. Mario, a la ola wave for you!

    Footballer Hairdo: Sami Khedira

Unlike his team mate Mario Gomez, Sami Khedira was at the World Championship in Brazil – but he still narrowly missed the finals because of an injury. The football star is appearing at the 2016 European Championship with his familiar fighting spirit and a new look: the formerly chin-length hair (a trademark of the midfield hero along with a headband) is now cut short! A reaction to separating from his girlfriend, GNTM beauty Lena Gercke, or to set the mood for the European Championship title? No matter, it's a popular style! The World Champion's trendy short cut features flowing transitions on the sides, the top hair is longer and Sami Khedira styles it to the side for the hip look

    Footballer Hairdo: Olivier Giroud

The goal-getter from FC Arsenal is considered one of Europe's best offenders. And one of the best looking! Premier League star Olivier Giroud is happy with the image of France's Beckham. A win would be even better. We will see. What is the look of the handsome athlete who intends to lead his Équipe Tricolore to the title? This hip hairdo: the sides and back of the head are evenly trimmed to a few millimetres, the longer hair on the crown is purposefully styled up – a powerful hairdo that puts the French footballer at the head of the league, at least in terms of appearance

    Footballer Hairdo: David Alaba

Offensive, defensive, midfield, defence – David Alaba from Austria has already proven his football talent in a variety of positions. The Bavarian pro proves flexible when it comes to his hairdo as well: sometimes trimmed short, at other times long and sleek. At the 2016 European Championship in France, this pro player will appear with his natural curls. No extra kick for the kicker? But of course: the all-rounder is guaranteed to be a highlight on the field with the ends of his hair dyed blonde!

    Footballer Hairdo: Toni Kroos

He has the last laugh: World Champion Toni Kroos is the only German to date who was able to earn the coveted Champions League title with not one but two clubs. First with FC Bayern München, and most recently in May of 2016 with his current team from Real Madrid. The midfield player seems to feel especially comfortable on the road to victory. All the better for the DFB eleven he wants to lead to victory at the European championship. Toni Kroos comes to the field with the look of a genuine winner that is sure to convince even before the kick-off: the sides cool and short, the longer top hair slicked to the side. This makes the otherwise very clear gentleman style look casual and modern. Masterful!
