Beach waves are not only trendy among women, this casual holiday style is popular among men as well! Learn how to bring the Beach Boys' added coolness to the city, and how the surfer style works in hair of any length

  • What defines the surfer style? The tanned skin? A colourful Hawaiian shirt? The board? Seaman's yarns. In truth it is all about the hair – whipped into its characteristic form by sun, wind and salt water. Beach waves perfectly reflect the casualness and lifestyle of the beach boys. Men are bringing it from the beach to the city – surfer hair with the slightly wave structure is highly popular. It is also absolutely suitable for everyday wear, simple and quick to style – holiday feeling included.

  • The Typical Surfer Hairstyle

Naturalness is the key to the simple beach look. Surfer hair knows no severe parting, sharp-edged shaving or correctly brushed styling like the comb-over. This relaxed hairstyle is created solely by an ocean breeze and salt water. This gives the hair its perfect (soft) waves, with a grippy texture and the matt look. The hair also bleaches the hair slightly, naturally lightening the lengths and tips.

You want that too, but there is no beach in sight? No problem. With the right styling know-how, you can also have it in the city. We present the coolest do-it-yourself surfer styles.

    Surfer Style with Short Hair

Long hair is not mandatory for the popular beach waves look. If the top hair is slightly longer, even short cuts can be styled according to this hot trend. For the smart surfer style, simply rub some texturing paste between your fingers and use it to loosely sweep the hair to one side. It should look as though your hair is windblown. A few ends are allowed to fall casually over the forehead for an even more natural look

Surfer Style in the Wet Look

The wet look is a popular surfer style version. Its main attraction: all day long, your hair looks as though you were just riding a wave. For the wet look, distribute about a hazelnut sized amount of gel in damp or also towel-dried hair and casually knead the ends. Repeat the process for longer hair, or even more wet hair

    Surfer Style with Fringe

Fringe hairstyles also have beach look potential. Simply knead the hair with texturing paste (with the matt effect for the right sunny side of life finish) to the front, shaping it so the hair over the forehead falls over the eyebrows in broad strands. Concerned this will interfere with your view? No worries, since the hair now has good grip and can be easily styled for a clear line of sight

    Surfer Style with Mid-Length Hair

The wave effect comes out even better in somewhat longer hair. A slightly layered mid-length cut for instance is ideal. Thanks to the layered cut, shoulder-length hair naturally falls like it does on the surfer boys. To make sure it stays that way: distribute texturing salt spray in the lengths, knead through once and you will have the genuine beach hair look. Hint: if you part your hair, make sure the parting is not overly accurate – you want it to look natural and casual after all

    Surfer Style with Long Hair

Hair that is more than shoulder length is practically made for the surfer style. Here the ombré look is cool, with hair that is lighter on the ends than the hairline and lengths. As though it was bleached by the sun. Salt spray (for added grip) or a texturing paste (for better hold) creates the relaxed beach texture. It is best to only apply the products to the lengths and ends, leaving the hairline smooth and guaranteeing a well-kempt appearance
