Niomi got her start on YouTube, followed by a successful blog. Her videos and blog posts are all about fitness, health and beauty. She recently turned her popular "What I eat in a day" video series into a book. "Eat smart: What to eat in a day - Every Day" was published in 2016. To Miss Smart, eating smart means being healthy, fit and happy. Niomi is always smiling, her look is natural and feminine, so it comes as no surprise that Audrey Hepburn is one of her style idols. In this #SCHWARZKOPFcreators interview, she lets us in on the secret behind her soft beach waves, laughs about her worst hair fail and tells us what beauty means to her…
Niomi's natural looks for daytime, evening and lazy Sundays
Which current hair trend do you like best?
I really like a natural look. I'm all about beach waves and kind of a laid back style. I curl my hair a bit and brush it out, so that I get natural big waves.
Would you go for an extreme hairstyle like the buzzcut?
I think many people can get away with short hair, but for me personally I love having long hair with natural waves.
How do you like to wear your hair in daily life?
Sometimes I wear a high ponytail and then wrap around some hair at the base.
What's your look on a lazy Sunday?
My hair is normally just tied up into a messy bun and I'll wear ripped jeans and a white t-shirt.
Niomi on hair secrets, missteps and travel must-haves
Name three hair and beauty products you always carry in your travel bag.
I always carry argan oil, because sometimes my hair gets dry, especially in the summer. I always have it in my handbag, so I can put a little on the ends, which instantly makes my hair look healthy again. A little bottle of perfume, especially when I'm travelling. I also carry a hairbrush in my handbag.
What was your biggest hair faux pas?
When I was younger, about 15 years old, I wanted to have layers in my hair because that was trendy at the time. So, I asked my mum to cut them... Bad idea! [laughs] She kind of cut it into two block lengths, so we had to then cut my hair shorter to let it grow out.
What's your ultimate hair secret?
People always ask me how I get this wavy hair, because my hair is naturally quite straight. I just tie my hair into a French braid and let it dry naturally overnight. In the morning when it's dry, I have natural waves - it's that simple!
Niomi on role models and style inspiration
What hairstyle will you wear when you're 70?
I think I'll still have really long hair. I'll be one of these grandmas with ridiculously long grey hair and probably will wear it up in a ponytail or bun. For a glamorous event, I'll just leave my hair open and let it fall down in long, luxe grey strands hopefully.
Who is a real role model for you and why?
There's a few…I love Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and also Sienna Miller. She has that amazing hair; her hair looks so healthy and she has these lovely natural waves. But I'm mostly inspired by women from decades ago, like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe with their glamorous style.
Who inspires you?
I get inspiration from everyone, whether it's my family, my mum, my grandmother, or just someone walking down the street who has a great look. But my main inspiration is Audrey Hepburn. I just love her.
If you could be someone else for a day, whose life would you want to live?
Probably Audrey Hepburn. I would love to at least have met her. But yeah, living her life would be the absolute dream.
Niomi on confidence and self-care
What do you like most about yourself?
My ambition. I'm quite an ambitious person. I really give everything to make my dreams and goals a reality.
What's your ultimate confidence booster?
When I have a pampering session, I spend the evening putting on face masks, painting my nails, curling my hair and then the whole next day, I feel really good. That's my ultimate confidence booster, spending time to make myself look and feel good.
What makes a person really beautiful?
Confidence and a great smile. When someone has a nice smile, then I think happiness shines through.
Through our appearance, we can express our personality. Which hairstyle is 100% you?
Easy and relaxed, laid back, natural tousled waves, kind of quite beachy. Deep down I feel I should live in Sydney on the beach, not in London, it's so me!
Niomi Smart's hair, food, fashion and beauty faves
Up-do or loose hair?
Main dish or dessert?
What is your favorite #OOTD (outfit of the day)?
I keep it quite classic. Fitted tailored trousers, with a T-Shirt tucked in with some heeled boots, delicate jewellery and a statement bag.
What is one thing you want to achieve in 2018?
I suppose my goal in life every single year is just happiness. It shows that everything I'm doing is something I want to be doing.
How do you motivate yourself to work out and eat well on lazy days?
I know that eating well and exercising makes me feel good and makes me feel like the best version of myself. That motivates me.
